Cyprus 2013

What’s next – Cyprus ? Some of you will be aware that we have been exploring with the Committee how we can replicate the successful Training Camp held in Cyprus in December ’10. – but hopefully not the bit that involved doubts about whether we could get home for Christmas ! We are all aware that the financial climate is having an impact upon us all & having listened carefully to parents, we have made some preliminary decisions which we would like to share with you all. The key thing we are hearing, is that another trip would be well supported, but parents need time to pay – especially those with more than one swimmer who wants to go.

We have therefore made some tentative decisions:

When ?

Looking at October ’12 Half Term & the week before Christmas ’12 doesn’t work in 2012 – the projected school holidays would mean we would have to take the children out of school for a whole week, coupled with the fact that October is really very expensive. We have settled therefore on February ’13 – currently looking at leaving on Wednesday 6th February ’13 for 7 days – this would involve travel & accommodation at the most economical rates & only 3 days off school – as before. How much ? Prices have not yet been released - so estimating the cost is difficult. However the Committee are agreed that we will fix the cost at £650 (only £25 more than last time) and provided the overall budget doesn’t change by more than 5% we will hold that price. If we need to increase it beyond the 5% – parents will have the option to opt out before we actually book & any monies paid will be refunded in full. Once booked we will of course all be committed. There will be no need for a large deposit – the cost can be spread over 13 monthly payments of £50, commencing in November ’11. Who can go ? Essentially the Camp is by invitation – you have to be of an appropriate standard, committed to training on a regular basis & capable of living & behaving away from Mum & Dad for a whole week............ No worries really – you can have Sandra as a Mum for a whole week!

Where ?

We are planning to go to Limassol again – the general concensus seems to favour that: * Superb 50m pool, recently re-furbished * Some sessions for the younger swimmers in their 25m pool * Weather is usually warm at that time of year * Atlantica Oasis Hotel has been used before * Lots to do, with buffet style food * Thomsons hotel – helps to keep standards up * Opportunities for cultural programme * Team building activities * Timing good – a month before Wilts Champs’ * Chance to train for up to 4 hours a day Atlantica Oasis Hotel We are planning to stay again at the 4* Atlantica Hotel in Limassol – we have stayed there before, many times. It’s a hotel that has been used extensively by Thomsons in the past & as a result, they are always under constant pressure to improve facilities & lower prices. It’s the intention to book through Thomsons when their prices for 2013 become available.

It is proven that a training camp improves team moral, brings a team closer together and overall improves a swimmers results and confidence in their events.  The time away at a training camp will allow athletes to focus on their training without the everyday distractions of home or school.  It also gives athletes the chance to enjoy different cultural experiences depending on the location you choose to go. This year we are going to Cyprus. The pool that we will be training in has hosted the swimming events of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe Cyprus 2009. The venue provides additional services, include training areas, offices, press facilities, commentator booths and VIP rooms.

The Swimming Pool was inaugurated in 1981, but has been completely refurbished in 2009 for the XIII GSSE. In addition to the eight-lane main pool, there is also a seperate 20m x 12m warm-up pool.
